Insurance, Gas, Tolls, Parking Meters costs all have soared. If your delivery carrier cannot find a legit parking spot they're forced to double park. NYC's Bus lanes and Bike Lanes create additional havoc trying to make deliveries.
Ever try offloading and delivering several thousand pounds of shelving or lockers in Times Square? No easy task. You risk harm when backing up traffic, enforcement agents, Endangering off loaders working in the street. On top of all that several major intersections have been closed to traffic like the one in Times Square. Making the delivery twice as hard. Our goal and everyone trying to move product into Manhattan is to get in as early as possible before traffic really begins. Mayor Bloomberg has been advocating evening or early am deliveries and the suppliers are on board. But our customers are not all acceptant of the idea yet. It would cost the customers more to bring in workers to receive deliveries. Most of NYC's business world starts at 9AM not 6AM.
Recently parking enforcements efforts as outlined in a recent article in the NY Daily News have seemed to double. 1) to help the flow of traffic and 2) to put a dent in the city's economic melt down. Combine that with the increased cost of parking tickets.
All creating high cost to NYC Customers. Distributors and Manufacturers have tried different methods to soften the blow of high freight rates. Some providers state "free delivery" which is never the case. The price is always built into the selling price.
