What can go wrong with NYC deliveries:
Just yesterday on Bleecker St in the West Village we saw 2 clerks at a high end retail store trying to drag a huge Snow Mobile through the door of their store. It wasn't going to happen. The snow mobile laid on its side was 4 feet wide, The door was 3 feet wide. Challenges like this happen every day in NYC. The person ordering the delivery had no idea that the truck driver would only drop the snow mobile on the sidewalk and not bring it in. We are not sure of the outcome, But the poor clerks were stranded. NYC is a challenging delivery area, Most buildings do not have loading docks, Some have no freight elevators. No matter what your buying, Walk though the project in your head. Make sure all possible issues are addressed before the order is placed. Proper prior preparation can avoid injuries, delays and save you money you we not planning to spend.
Also check with your building manager in advance, Some deliveries and installations will not be allowed unless a insurance certificate and appointment is scheduled.
Shelving Purchasing Tips
When starting a shelving project their are way to save money, time and space. Good quality shelving will hold a minimum of 600lbs per shelf. Always buy clip type adjustable shelving. It will save you a lot of setup time and today it costs the same as nut & bolt shelving. Shelving bought in units comes two ways. Starter units and add on units. A Starter unit is a complete unit of shelving. two sides or post, shelves, and back sway braces or solid back panels. Add on units have only one side the other side is attached to the starter unit. For each row you start begin with a starter unit, The rest of the unit can be all add on units.
Open shelving means the backs and sides have sway braces, closed sides means the sides and backs have closed in metal backs and sides. You can save alot of money with open shelving. You can also mix and match with closed sides and open backs. Good Shelving reps can help you design a cost effective system that can be adjusted easily as your needs grow. down the road you can add drawers, full height doors or 1/2 height doors.
Deliveries and how to avoid challenges
Shipping cost is a big factor in the shelving business, The most cost effective way is to have the shelving delivered unassembled. It will save you on freight and reduces the risk of scratches or damage. If you decide to install your shelving project. When the delivery arrives check all boxes carefully for damage of any kind. Check out the delivery closely. If you see damage and still decide to accept the delivery, Note the damage on the delivery ticket, Call the company you ordered from while the truck is their, Tell them to file a claim with the carrier ASAP. If the boxes are crunched but the material looks like its ok, sign the ticket, boxes crushed, Subject to internal inspection. But still notify the company you bought the shelving from. Take pictures and document all. Most important if their is damage and you just sign the delivery ticket without noting damage. The carrier is released for any claims.
Delivery issues to consider
If your ordering alot of shelving in a city, Please consider the following challenges. Most carriers will not deliver inside if this was not requested when ordering. They will bring it to the end of their truck for you to bring in. If your building does not have a loading dock, Requesting a liftgate will bring the pallets down to the ground to ease the offload.
If you have a large shelving project, consider hiring installers to meet the truck, offload the delivery and install it for you. Good installers are professionals that can be in and out quickly. Make sure they are insured.
The Truth about quick ship claimsMost manufacturers only stock standard sizes in 2-3 colors available for quick ship. Other colors are available, But lead time can be from 4-6 weeks depending on when ordered.
What size shelving should I order?
If you creating shelves for books 12 in deep shelving is fine, Binders or Boxes, Consider 18 in deep shelving. Many order 2ft deep shelving, But it gets expensive consider 18 inch instead. shelving widths range from 36, 42, 48 wide. Keep in mind the wider you go with widths the less posts or sides you will have.
If your boxes or products are more than 2 feet deep, consider bulk rack, Bulk rack is great for boxes or parts that are hand loaded. depths for bulk rack start at 24 deep and range up to 48 inches deep. Widths range from 4 ft to 8ft. Great cost saver.
